The new school year is so exciting – and it is often overwhelming for our kids with overexcitabilities. They may be happy it is a new year with new learning and new friends, but there may be other factors influencing their new start.
Not all kids have everything they need when the year starts. They may not be wearing new school clothes and may feel bad about that. They may not have the coolest school supplies or even all the supplies that are assigned by the rooms.
Whether these kids who have less than the others are our friends, students, or our own kids, be aware of how bittersweet the new year can be. Can you help? Encourage all students to be understanding, and encourage the students with less to focus on their studies rather than what they have. It may not be easy, but a supportive system of teachers, friends, librarians, and parents help.
